Piano-only albums, especially of sacred music, tend to range anywhere from the inane to the ostentatiously showy, appealing either to the nostalgic Christian or the “artsy-fartsy” Christian…and leaving out a lot of Christians who fit somewhere in between. Worship In the Sound of Piano is my attempt at a worship piano album that bridges that gap.
Drawing from my love of neoclassical minimalism, in songs like “What A Beautiful Name,” I aimed at simply letting the sound of
the piano itself evoke a sense of worship. In songs like “O Praise The Name,” I drew from my experience as a modern worship leader, letting the sensibilities of guitars and drums inform the structure, dynamics, and chord voicings. Any fan of these songs will find in these piano versions a reflection of the original recordings with a fresh reenvisioning.
But perhaps the accomplishment in this album that I am most proud of are the two originals – “Whenever I Think” and “Wherever I Go” – that were both written while recording this album and that came uniquely out of the place of worship I had been in at the time. They felt like gifts given to me in the moment and I hope they become gifts to you too.
